Introduction to Woodstock and Saugerties Swimming Holes

Nestled within the verdant landscapes of Ulster County, New York, the Woodstock Area swimming holes offer a refreshing retreat amidst the natural beauty of the Catskill Park. Located near the towns of Woodstock and Saugerties, these two distinct spots—Little Deep and Big Deep—are beloved by locals and visitors alike for their serene ambiance, varied swimming experiences, and vibrant surroundings.

Little Deep: A Hidden Gem of Saw Kill Creek

Little Deep is accessible via Zena Road (Route 30) and provides a charming slice of the Saw Kill Creek. The creek meanders through a wooded area, creating pockets of swimming spots that cater to diverse preferences. The first area is family-friendly, complete with shallow zones perfect for children, a fun rope swing, and quirky features like log seating and tree stump chairs. The atmosphere here is lively yet tranquil, making it an ideal spot for picnics or casual relaxation.

For those seeking solitude or a more liberal environment, a short walk upstream leads to a clothing-optional area primarily frequented by gay men. The water here is cool and inviting, offering a deep enough area for swimming laps, although it’s more suited for playful splashing and unwinding. However, visitors should note that the creek downstream flows near a golf course, which may introduce environmental concerns regarding water purity.

Big Deep: Woodstock’s Favorite Town Park

Big Deep, on the other hand, is a town park just off Route 212, easily identified by its wooded driveway marked by barrels on either side. This swimming hole is larger and more popular, especially during the sweltering summer months. A short hike from the entrance reveals a tranquil stream bordered by lush greenery, with sunlight filtering through the canopy to create dappled patterns on the water's surface.

The swimming experience here is versatile, with areas for both families and more private spots downstream, where bathing suits are often foregone. Big Deep’s combination of accessibility and natural charm makes it a favorite among Woodstock residents, and its deeper waters are perfect for cooling off on a hot day.

Best Time to Visit These Swimming Holes

Seasonal variations make both Little Deep and Big Deep unique experiences throughout the year. Summer is undoubtedly the peak season, with warm temperatures enhancing the allure of the crisp, refreshing waters. Spring brings vibrant blooms and a quieter atmosphere, while autumn offers a breathtaking display of fall foliage that transforms the surrounding area into a painter’s palette of reds, oranges, and yellows. Winter is less frequented, but the snow-covered landscape can make for stunning photography opportunities.

Safety Tips for Swimming in Woodstock and Saugerties

Safety is paramount, and visitors should be mindful of slippery rocks and variable water depths. It’s recommended to wear sturdy water shoes and keep an eye on younger swimmers. Additionally, sunscreen and insect repellent are advised, as the wooded areas can attract bugs.

Flora, Fauna, and Photography Opportunities

The wildlife and flora in these areas add to their appeal. Visitors may encounter deer grazing in the distance, birds chirping from the treetops, and aquatic life darting beneath the clear waters. The creeks are bordered by moss-covered rocks, ferns, and towering maples that complete the picturesque scenery. For photographers, the interplay of light and shadow, coupled with the natural features of the swimming holes, creates endless opportunities for capturing memorable moments.
